How to Handle Sadness When You Lose Someone

Step 1: It’s Okay to Feel Sad

Losing someone you love is tough, and it’s totally okay to feel sad. Faith felt a big emptiness in her heart when her aunt went to heaven. She didn’t want to play or even go outside.

Recognize your feelings and give yourself time to feel them. It’s the first step towards healing. Just like Theo learned to manage his anger in Theo's Journey Through Anger, it's important to acknowledge and understand your emotions.

Step 2: Find a Special Way to Remember Them

Faith’s mom came up with the best idea ever! She gave Faith a small tree to plant in their garden to remember her Aunt Eloise. You can do something similar.

Think about what your loved one liked and find a way to celebrate that. It could be anything from planting a tree, drawing their favorite picture, or making a scrapbook full of memories. Hikema discovered the importance of honesty through a special story in A Story About Honesty: How Hikema Learned To Tell The Truth, showing how special actions and memories can impact us.

Step 3: Spend Time with What Reminds You of Them

Faith took care of her tree every day. She watered it, talked to it, and shared stories about Aunt Eloise. This made her feel connected to her aunt. Spend time doing things that remind you of your special person. It helps keep their memory alive and makes you feel close to them, even though they’re not physically with you.

Step 4: Share Your Feelings with Family and Friends

When the day of the big family reunion came around, Faith shared the story of the tree and what it meant. Her family hugged, cried a bit, but most importantly, they smiled and remembered Aunt Eloise together. Talking about your feelings and memories with others who loved the person too can bring you comfort. It’s a great way to not feel alone.

Turning Sadness into Something Beautiful

Using Memories to Create Happiness

Faith’s little tree grew strong and tall, and so did her happiness. Her garden started blooming with all the colors of the rainbow, bringing back her big, bright smile. When you do something special to remember your loved one, it can bring beauty back into your life. It’s like turning your tears into colorful flowers.

Keep the Love Alive

Faith's tree was more than just a tree; it was a part of her heart. It showed that love doesn’t stop growing, just like that tree. Find a way to keep the love going in your own way. It could be a project, a hobby, or even a new habit that reminds you of the person you miss.

A Big Lesson for Life

When we miss someone special, it’s natural to feel sad. But Faith’s story teaches us that we can find ways to keep their love alive in our hearts. Whether it’s planting a tree, making art, or sharing stories, these acts help us heal and remember the happy times.

So, next time you feel sad about missing someone, think of the good times you shared. Find a special way to celebrate their memory and watch how it helps you feel better. Remember, like Faith and her forever tree, the love we hold in our hearts never stops growing.
